Collaborative Upholstery Project with Elsie Coyle
This project develops conceptual and material ideas formed in mine and Elsie’s studio projects (see Through the Looking Glass), consolidated in the reupholstery of a collection of chairs. United by our interests in geometric and architectural imagery, we combine my colourful and graphic knitting with Elsie’s tonal, material-based approaches to fabric embellishment. Sourcing the chairs from an architectural salvage yard and using 100% deadstock yarns and found materials, we sought to give these pieces a new life.
Outcomes (Circle motif chair: elastic, sewing thread and cashmere, framed by cotton applique. Blue striped chair: felted lambswool and cashmere, embellished with hand embroidered wool thread).
Outcomes: Five seat cushions made with knitted farbic (100% deadstock cashmere, elastic, cotton and lambswool) which was quilted, couched or embellished with thread and found materials (metal wire, aluminium and washers).
